The best chess players on the planet got together in 1895 in Hasting England. Among them was former world champhion Wilhelm Steinitz. No one gave the aging, ailing Steinitz a chance.

At the end, Steinitz opponent a hapless young world champion named Curt Von Bareleben saw the unstoppable checkmate coming. Rather then finish, Bareleben tried to deny the old master his dazzling combination by rudely leaving the tournament without even resigning.

Bareleben still lost.
