A goat ran past, followed closely by an axe-wielding chef. As they passed the table, Emily heard a slight squelching noise close to her feet. She looked down, horrified to see blood oozing from between the floorboards. The deaf mute leant over from the nearby table, where he had been assiduously plucking at his nose-hairs. "Can I help?", he intoned, in a passable imitation of a French accent.
