Not all of the MPU activity is at the high end - or at Intel. Acer Inc., Compaq Computer Corp., and others next month will roll out a line of sub-$1,000 PCs that are based on Cyrix Corp.'s 5GX86 chip, an MPU that combines the processor, core logic, and other functions all on the same IC.
"There's a booming market for these kinds of systems, especially in developing markets," said a source from Cyrix. "There is also huge demand in developing markets for very, very high-end systems." |
