Friend of mine burnt 2 Ditto drives in one year. I am on my third month with one and it appears to work well and has completely restored my drive once already.

I burnt one WD 21000 drive in two years and two syquest 1 gigiebyte removable drives in one month. I heard they, Syquest had a high return rate and the drive AND the disks permanently damage on crash and the data CANNOT be recovered. The ZIP drives have click of death where the disks suddenly fail like floppies.. I lost 2 years business data depending on WD drives and Syquest drives. I have heard of good runs with the Syquest equipment, particularly the smaller size stuff.. but the reliability coefficient is given by the failure rate.. which is not seen by some and too often by others.. A Quantum SCSI shows no sign of giving any trouble...not a dropped bit in 5 years..

I have resolved to seek ONLY the highest quality from now on in data storage.. this is not from ny experience in the area of Western Digital, Syquest, or Zip/Iomega.

I am going to shop but I WILL NOT be believing the computer mags.. their test runs do not have any reliability as they do not have the most important factor ..time.. Maybe Jerry Pournelle has some credibility or John Dvorak as they live with the stuff for a while, but the average test and report is misleading.

I head that LS-120's are more reliable and JAZ. Jaz is high high cost though.

Right now I am looking towards Travan or Colorado or the CD Rom recorders... data is precious and I cannot remember it all.
