Taiwan's Inventec Buys Digital's R&D
Business From Compaq for US$32.8 Mln

Bloomberg News
August 9, 1998, 7:49 p.m. PT

Taipei, Aug. 10 (Bloomberg) -- Inventec Co., moving to
strengthen ties with Compaq Computer Corp., said it bought the
research and development division of Digital Equipment's Taiwan
branch from Compaq for NT$1.13 billion ($32.8 million).

Inventec, which sells all of its notebook personal computers
to the Houston-based Compaq, will produce computer servers
and
work stations -- which Digital had made -- in the newly acquired
plant.
''The purchase has a good chance to brighten our outlook,''
said an official in Inventec's finance department who declined to
be named. ''We'd like to take this chance to prosper with
Compaq,'' among the top three PCs makers in the U.S.

Compaq said in June it will close eight facilities around
the world in an effort to meld its businesses with those of
recently acquired Digital. Its factory here is scheduled to be
closed by December.

On the Taiwan Stock Exchange, Inventec share dropped as
much
as NT$3 to NT$112 as July sales fell short of expectations.
Some
10 million shares changed hands, making them the third-most
active by value.
