Good morning George!
Mea culpa! I can tell you exactly what happened. It was the value attached to the word 'gray". Your statement had none expressed; I read it as a negative. It was my problem. So often people use the term as a pejorative that I automatically saw it as a criticism and tried to explain it. i thought you were sweetly telling me I was wimpy.
Also you're right about the line of poetry; I shouldn't have leapt to a conclusion based on a dozen words. It certainly portends disaster---for whatever reason the I's could not be a We. After 30 years who knows what happened---were they I's for 30 years? Did someone change? Were they a We that fell apart? Not that I think age has anything to do with the ability to move beyond I.
That was really a lovely line of poetry. And I read it differently (thinking about Jung so much at that moment) than I would have normally. I was thinking of how often ( I'm watching teens go through a lot of this right now) people confuse "we" with actually wanting another to be part of their "I" (Is this getting bizarre?) instead of realizing that healthy "we's" permit and augment the other's "I-ness" I'm laughing at myself right now---I know what I'm trying to say. But I do better with stories about family outings.
All the I's in this post ----have used up the allotment for the day.
