(MATK) said a National Institutes of Health study concludes that early dietary intake of the company's docosahexaenic acid plus arachidonic acid appears necessary for optimal development of the brain and eye. In a press release Thursday, Martek said the randomized clinical study of 108 term infants showed those fed DHA and AA-supplemented formula had visual development results consistent with breast-fed infants. The company said infants fed formula without DHA and AA had a deficiency of about "one line on an eye chart" compared to breast milk and DHA plus AA fed babies. Martek said the study gave "compelling" support for DHA and AA supplementation in infant formulas and said the study suggests that availability of dietary DHA during this critical developmental period may lead to favorable persistent changes in the underlying neural structure and function of infants. Martek's DHA and AA oils are vegetable oils containing two long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, DHA and AA, which are naturally delivered to babies through breast milk.
