(BSNS WIRE) Sun Aggressively Expands Developer Base for Solaris Operatin
Offers Free Licenses for Non-Commercial Use on PCs and Workstations

Business Editors/High Tech Writers

PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 10, 1998--

Program Lets Developers, Students, Researchers and Enthusiasts
Try the Industry's Most Flexible Enterprise and Internet
Development Platform

To promote software development on its industry-leading Internet,
Java (TM) and enterprise development platform, Sun Microsystems
(NASDAQ:SUNW) today announced that for the cost of media, shipping and
handling charges it would provide a free license to its Solaris(TM)
operating environment when used for non-commercial use.
Through an expanded Sun(SM) Developer Connection(SM) program,
developers, members of the academic community and Solaris enthusiasts
worldwide can request a free license to the latest version of the
Solaris operating environment for teaching, research, software
development, software testing and other non-commercial use on PCs or
SPARC(TM) workstations.
This program will make it easier for a new group of developers to
experience the power, scalability, reliability and flexibility of
Sun's market-leading Solaris operating environment. According to new
data released by International Data Corporation (IDC), Sun has
captured UNIX(R) server market leadership by outranking all
competitors in UNIX server shipments for 1997.
Non-commercial developers can order their copy of the Solaris
operating environment at sun.com, while
students, educators and researchers should access
sun.com to place an order.
"Many developers are frustrated by the limitations of their
current operating systems and would welcome the chance to install the
Solaris operating environment on their PCs and give it a try," said
John McFarlane, president Solaris Software, Sun Microsystems.
"With the Solaris operating environment, developers gain broad,
direct access to operating system capabilities, increasing their
creative capacity and speeding development time. By trying Solaris
software for themselves, they will understand why it is considered to
be such a high quality software environment."

Solaris: Free and Easy

For the price of media, shipping and handling, non-commercial
developers worldwide can register for free membership in the Sun
Developer Connection and place an order for a copy of the Solaris
operating environment for non-commercial use.
With the Solaris operating environment, developers gain the
freedom to collaborate on high-performance applications that are ready
for quick, easy high-volume deployment. It is an open, standard-based
environment that offers:

Sun is a leading provider of open network computing solutions to
colleges and universities around the world, powering academic research
and high performance computing systems, campus administration, digital
libraries and student instruction systems.
"All around the world, students, educators, and researchers have
asked for Solaris for their own use, on their own systems, at home and
in their classrooms," said Kim Jones, vice president, Academic and
Research Computing, Sun Microsystems. "With greater access to the
power and reliability of the Solaris operating environment, students
will be able to develop and enhance skills that they need for careers
in software development and IT management.
"Educators will be able to easily deploy the latest release of
Solaris software across their campuses on systems using the SPARC(TM)
or Intel architectures. This is the ideal complement to the Sun
program that offers free Java development tools for teaching. Now
those interested in Java technologies can make greater use of the
Solaris operating environment in their adventures with the Java
programming language."

Complete Access to Solaris Developer Resources

The Free Solaris program is being managed through Sun(SM)
Developer Connection(SM) program, a comprehensive resource designed to

and facilitate self-help, learning and discussion among Solaris
developers, students, educators and researchers through Web chats,
forums and feedback mechanisms available through the Sun Developer
Connection Web site.
Individuals, non-commercial developers and members of the
academic community who register for the Sun Developer Connection under
the Free Solaris program will have access to all Sun Developer
