The arguments the Y2K zanies put forward about software issues are disingenuous or simply don't make sense.

A bit thin on substance as to precisely what you mean.

I'd certainly be very willing to state that much of what is written (screamed) about Y2K comes from folks who think the last mainframe is about to be unplugged and that Pentiums are 'big iron'.

Assuming you know who he is, how would you label Capers Jones (http://www.spr.com) ? Ignoring whatever Y2K numbers he's been quoted as saying (the press does love to take things it doesn't understand & quote out of context), have you read any of his books about software metrics?
