A search at Viking turned up some HP Pavillion 8230 compatible RAM (according to them) config.vikingcomponents.com

Mohawk has Viking RAM 64 MB $167 mohawkmem.com

I think you got a very good deal on your machine.

I never buy extended warranties for myself. It seems that my problems are rarely covered under warranty. There may be problems if you change the machine in any way (Win98..Multimonitors etc.) I have had manufacturers tell me that if I open the case the warranty is void. I am not recommending this approach as everyone has to make their own risk assessment.
