Taiwan's Tatung has added value by launching a total solution, which it offers to its domestic customers: It ships its DVD players with a high-end TV, an AC-3 amplifier and speakers. The set carries a street price of less than $3,000. "A DVD player working with a low-end TV set cannot offer a high level of performance," said an executive at Tatung. "Users would not know how good DVD players are."
Makers also try to vary the feature set depending on the target market. According to Danitec's Chang, Japanese users like simple DVD machines and prefer remote-control functionality, while in contrast, users in the United States and Europe look for function buttons on the main unit, in case the remote control is lost.
Unlike its enhanced kit aimed at the Taiwan market, most of Tatung's export DVD players will provide simple functions to attract OEM customers. The company is also talking with some large companies in Taiwan about OEM cooperation. The TDV-2100 from Tatung features a built-in Dolby AC-3 5.1 channel decoder with S-Video and CVBS video output terminals, a digital audio S/PDIF optical output port, and a digital audio S/PDIF RF output. It also comes with a full-function remote control, which features karaoke key control.
Yanion's first DVD player, scheduled for launch this month, will be equipped with all six regional codes, so users can view DVD titles purchased anywhere in the world on the player.
