Paul, AMD is switching to an Alpha interface and not the slot 1.They use the package that slot 1 uses but it differs electrically. For CPU changeability the integration of the CPU and Cache etc on the cartridge in close proximity allow for greater speed. If not for that you could do all slot 1 does by placing the CPU and memory on opposites sides of the board with the chip set close by as well. No ability to change the CPU at all. Will run very fast, 1000 Mhz reachable.
No-one has posted the technical merits of slot 1 here to examine. Talk about it seems to be a method of packing the CPU, Memory and chip set(part of it) on a removeable module. It seems to have little merit technically except as a monopoly tactic?
