Academicians have explored many market "anomolies" to determine if there are ways to "beat" the market on a risk-adjusted basis.

Unfortunately, most of the research has been conducted in the area of value vs. growth (i.e., low Price/Book stocks vs. "growth" stocks), the "small firm effect", and the "January effect."

Market timing falls into the area of TA, and as such, could be considered more of a art than a science.

Still fun to discuss, though.
