Then again Amazon could turn the shrewdest ShopBot of all (theirs) loose on the Internet and provide one-stop shopping with a lowest-price guarantee.

Sounds good, except that they apparently don't think consumers want bots that find the lowest price, just the lowest one that will pay Amazon for a listing.

Jeff Bezos is smarter than the bears.

Why? Because he went to Princeton and managed a hedge fund? Seems to me that should frighten the bulls more than the bears. After all, he needs to create demand for the stock, not supply, to maximize his final take. He doesn't need to fool the bears, just the bulls. Besides, his resume certainly doesn't scream "hey, I should be the CEO of a giant, high-tech retailing empire", but is does whisper "psst, I know how to create demand for a stock so a few of us can get rich(er) at the expense of the investing public."
