Ok, but just remember...you asked for it...

It seems that originally the snail carried its shell on its back straight up and down. Now with the anatomy of the snail being what it is (i.e., a coiled shell) there was no where for its waste products to go but out the top of the shell. It just so happens with the original design that this was directly above the poor snail's head ... so now do you know why the present day snail carries its shell on to the side?

Do we geologists get a quality education or what?
