Trey: The very largest tech companies such as IBM, Lucent, etc have not really been much interested in the wireless market until the past year or two. When you consider the vast size of their revenues compared to the size of the wireless market a few years back, it simply wasn't worth their time to get into the market. Now, however two things have changed...one, the wirless market is large enough to interest them and is growing larger; two, as other markets for their products mature and stabilize, they look to other fields, like wireless, to focus their R&D dollars.
Why can't vlsi stave off the competition indefinitely? There is a small chance they will, but the past suggests otherwise. Being first inany give tech field is mostly a matter of spending R&D dollars in the appropriate applied science. This isn't like theoreticl physics where one person's insight makes a quantum leap in the field. It's more like grinding away at a problem until a cost effective solution arrives. The company that is best at applied science research is usually the company that spend the most. The larger companies have the deep pockets to outspend vlsi in this area.
Additionally, there are two more things to consider. The large companies have patents on technology that make the production process more efficient for them...like IBM's Copper line process, and the recently announced insulation process. Finally, the larger companies can achieve economies of scale in the production process that vlsi can't.
