---------------------------------------------------------------------- DirecTV says Japan subscribers total 152,400
TOKYO, Aug 5 (Reuters) - Japanese multi-channel satellite broadcaster DirecTV said on Wednesday that its subscribers totalled 152,400 as of the end of July. DirecTV, which is partly owned by Hughes Electronics Corp of the United States, launched its multi-channel satellite broadcast service in Japan last December.
It said in a statement it had reached a pact with developers to install multiple dwelling unit systems for 85,000 homes in 1,500 apartment buildings and expects to attract subscribers from people moving into the apartments.
The broadcaster has met tough competition from SkyPerfecTV, formed from a merger between Sky Broadcasting (JSkyB) and Japan's PerfecTV.
PerfecTV was launched in late 1996 and SkyPerfecTV says it has 750,000 subscribers.
