A toast to our specialist at the AMEX! Let's all raise our Shirley Temples and wish good cheer to our indispensible market maker. I am certain that he will be well rewarded for his efforts and hopefully, so will some of us also. Actually I am once again pleased with the disconnect of AXC and the general market. It tells me that, among the thinking participants, whosever is in now is it. There is the risk of another "Index Fund" sale but I regard this as an aberration - something like a storm passing by. While it is uncomfortable, it has little to do with location location location. The implication I see is that a disappointing earnings release is probably already discounted and that the effect of a good news item will seen as a newsworthy wildcard surprise. A lack of news will probably result in more drift on low volume at these prices. Although it may not be clear at this time, this drift is also a good thing. The 187K+ index sale along with the more distant Russell Small Cap Index adjustments and the loss of optionable status are in a sense, buyers in reserve on the rebound. Perhaps the future automatic reactions of these players will take the place of shorts covering. I had some fun yesterday and today. I got a bit at 1 7/16 and much more this morning at 1 3/8. Time will tell. If your perspective is longer term - think months years - IMO, this is again a good one. Ed Perry
