Bay Unveils Policy-Based Networking
Services Plans

ay Networks today unveiled a road map for delivering a set of
products that allows customers to deploy and manage network
policies.

Policies are rules recognized by network management software
and network devices for customizing bandwidth to applications or
groups of users. Cisco and 3Com, Bay's major competitors,
already have policy networking strategies, as do several smaller
vendors.

Bay's offering will be folded into its Optivity network management
line, and will be called Optivity Policy Services. The products, which
will start rolling out in mid-1999, will include a policy server, which
validates requests for network service against policy information
stored in a network directory.

The line also will incorporate a Web-based user interface and Bay's
existing NetID IP-address management software. Another piece will
be configuration software for configuring the various devices in a
network with policies.

Initially, Bay will focus on delivering policies that can be configured
just on a per-application basis. "That's what our customers are
asking for now," says J. Craig Easley, director of product
marketing. "We want our customers to walk with policy networking
before they run."

In the later stages--late 1999 through early 2000--Bay will provide
support for policies that can be dynamically reconfigured based on
user groups or on the network topology and current usage.
