That is sad. Most discount brokerage firms get rebates back from the large market makers. This might be NITE Securities, MASH, and Herzog. What Empire does is what they all do, except they offer a better rate. My firm is a flat fee brokerage firm that does not sacrifice the clients execution at all. Everything is done instantly. Empire is deep, deep discount. I have never dealt with them but if there was anything shady about them, the NASD would not have them around long. They most likely make their money with the number of trades per day and give their customers a price break.
