You're right. Nothing wrong with a little self-promotion. Throughout my cyberspace travels, I'll frequently fire off an e-mail to sales or whomever that I'm fed up with giving out my credit card to every manufacturer, retailer, publishers, etc every time I want to purchase something. I always inquire about renting-to-own if software is involved and pay-per-article for publications. Most have replied in kind and said currently they don't have a means to provide their content, goods, etc. that way.
However, if enough potential customers inquire, it may drive the concept home. It certainly can't hurt. So, next time you're at Cyberian Outpost or Egghead, send a quick note asking whether you can rent the product that you're interested in, instead of just buying it.
