The fact is - a smart short trader who honestly believes that BTIM is a good short play at 6 and change KEEPS HIS MOUTH SHUT and quietly does his business as he establishes his position.

The second fact is - the smart short trader then rakes the company over the coals publicly for the sole purpose of ... you guessed it ... covering his position.

This is the exact opposite of the well-known 'pump and dump'. It should be called 'smother and cover'. The fact is that each time the negative press comes out the stock does take a hit but in the final analysis this will be really no different than the 'pump and dump', just turn the chart upside down and it's all very clear as to the timing of the news.
