DEC picked it's partner better than Intel.

Intel chose AMD to second-source CPUs, which was a poor choice. AMD abused the relationship, so Intel was left with no choice other than to end it. If AMD had fulfilled their part of the bargain and produced complex parts for Intel to second-source, Intel would've been in leader in more markets than just CPUs. Stiffing Intel was one of the biggest blunders in business history, and should be taught as a case history in all business ethics classes. (For more info, check out the flame wars from several months ago on the AMD thread between Paul Engel and the AMD zealots).

DEC chose Samsung, who came from obscurity in a poor country to become the world's largest DRAM producer. If they repeat the success in CPUs, DEC will generate enormous profits from license fees. Samsung has a lot of excess capacity due to the DRAM glut, so they can crank out many Alphas. So far, the DRAM glut has been great for Intel, but in this case a new competitor is created.
