Your situation on AOL probably would have been even worse. The spread on this stock widens suddenly in fast markets and most entries/exits will incur ugly slippage if you don't use a limit order. In the NYSE specialist system, one "dictator" controls all the price movement, allegedly from his order "book" Amazing how all the orders disappear between wide price tiers when that (and other NYSE) stock is moving.
