The sensitivity of these stocks to the health of the economy is something I put out in this group a few weeks ago. If the economy (and the market) take a dive, you'll see the procedure volume decrease substantially. People are not going to put out the cost of refractive surgery if they think their wealth is dissolving.
Fewer procedures done will lead to fewer laser machine sales.
The whole industry could suffer a setback.
I am most concerned about 1999 when the powers that be pump up the potential malaise of the Y2K problem to the detriment of the market.
This could be a fatal blow to these stocks if the public decides it's time to hoard their savings.

Manny - I'm looking for a 5 to 1 reverse split. The company was probably betting on substantial procedure volumes combined with decreased stock supply to elevate the demand for the stock, and create some synergy, like Visx is now experiencing. I'm no longer sure of this scenario.
