LOMM's main product, the retractable syringe, appears to have huge upside potential. The greatest use for this type of syringe may in patients with highly contagious diseases such as HIV, where any infection (and legal liability), can be lethal such that use of more expensive syringes are justified.
There are other retractable syringes on the market, however, I understand that they have several disadvantages - they require some sort of manual manipulation in order for the needle to retract and are considerably more expensive than traditional syringes. As far as I know, LOMM's syringe is the only design that automatically retracts. Depending on the cost and ease of use, it may also be of use in needle exchange programs among drug users where re-use of needles is a serious problem. These programs are more common in Europe, however, I think there are several in the USA. Another potential use could be in veterinary medicine where the danger of accidental stabs are is great because injections are often given to highly agitated animals.
LOMM looks like it has products with considerable potential, however, their success will probably depend on the price people are willing to pay for safety.
