Peter,
A good starting point would be to follow some of the relevant threads on SI (there are several that are discussing this in depth).
Among those I read:
Asia Forum
techstocks.com
/* Asia Forum is quite literate. Good discussion
Waiting for the Big Kahuna
Subject 12382
/* The BK, fyi, is I gather the mother of all bear markets (or crashes). So, this is a profoundly bearish thread, though there are folks who are fundamentally short term traders looking for ways to make money on volatility, without having an opinion on the direction of the market.
There are several other threads that are valuable, plus links ...
It's hard for me to answer your question about Asia crises affecting the Global markets, at least just yet, for the following reasons:
- my working hypothesis is that this is not an Asian crisis. It's a global crisis, with global roots, that began in Asia, just like the trigger event for WWI began in Sarajevo. This is a hypothesis at this point, to be evaluated and proven or disproven.
- this is a rapidly moving target and the economic event of our lifetime. Historic parallels are events leading up to 1789, or 1939 ... we're caught in the grips of historic, seismic shifts that are not real clear as yet.
- I'm not a specialist in any of these areas.
- My views are my opinions, at this point, and offered as such.
- There are a lot of viewpoints out there, many wildly divergent ... it's a good idea to understand them in making your own assessment and decisions.
