Freeport-McMoRan Indonesia unit stalled Reuters Story - August 11, 1998 20:21 NEW ORLEANS, Aug 11 (Reuters) - Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. said Monday its Indonesian affiliate, P.T. Freeport Indonesia, has temporarily suspended mining and milling operations at its Grasberg complex in Indonesia as a result of a wildcat work stoppage by a group of workers. The company said in a statement that the voluntary suspension of operations was done in an orderly fashion on August 11 as a precautionary step to ensure the safety of employees and to avoid the possibility of confrontation. Although unorganized, the workers have cited economic and other employment issues as the reasons for their work stoppage. The actions of the workers have been peaceful and there have been no injuries or property damage and the affiliate's port operations are unaffected. Shipments of concentrates are being made from inventory. The affiliate is working with the Indonesian government authorities and its work force to resolve the matter.
