One of Fifteen Vendors Participating in UNH-IOL ATM Consortium Multi-Protocol Over ATM (MPOA) Test
MARLBOROUGH, Mass., Aug. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Inverness Systems(TM), Inc., a leading supplier of ATM source level software solutions, recently participated in the third 1998 multi-vendor ATM testing period during the week of July 20, 1998, at the University of New Hampshire's InterOperability Laboratory Facility. Inverness tested its new ATIC Multi-Protocol over ATM (MPOA) software modules, shipping since March 1998. Other participating companies were 3Com, Bay Networks, Cabletron Systems, Cisco Systems, Digital Technology, FORE Systems, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Interphase, Inverness Systems, NEC, Network Associates, Newbridge Networks, and Radcom. Since interoperability testing is so critical for the advance and customer adoption of ATM technology, these companies will continue joint testing efforts as members of the ATM Consortium.
In this recent round of ATM testing, the major focus was on the interoperability of devices as specified in the ATM Forum Multi-Protocol Over ATM (MPOA) version 1.0 specification. LAN Emulation Version 2.0 was used for connectivity testing, as well as the ATM Forum UNI 3.1 signaling protocol.

According to Scott Valcourt, manager of the UNH-IOL's ATM Consortium, "This group test period examined the early implementations of the MPOA specification. The group work, developed by all of the participants at this event, will allow for more extensive testing of MPOA at future group test periods and in the Laboratory on a daily basis." He added, "The participants of this Group Test Period have made a commitment to developing interoperable MPOA devices that conform to the ATM Forum Specification."
The Inverness ATIC MPOA software modules are the first commercially available software packages to offer a complete solution for MPOA client and server and NHRP (Next Hop Resolution Protocol) server as defined by the latest ATM Forum and Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) standards. The modules are written in ANSI C using advanced object-oriented design principles to let users easily and rapidly integrate them into their software environment. They are hardware and operating system independent and come with full integration to popular real time operating systems including pSOS+ from Integrated Systems (Nasdaq: INTS) and VxWorks from Wind River Systems (Nasdaq: WIND).
MPOA is an advanced protocol suite that provides significant degrees of performance optimizations and scalability when transporting legacy LAN traffic over an ATM network. The Inverness protocol suite consists of client-side procedures (MPOA Client) and servers (MPOA Server and an NHRP Server). The ATIC MPOA modules provide:

Inverness also provides LAN Emulation, including the new version 2.0 of the LANE (LAN Emulation) standard, as well as ATM Signaling modules that are required for MPOA operation.
University of New Hampshire's InterOperability Laboratory
The University of New Hampshire's InterOperability Laboratory encourages vendors to conduct testing by providing facilities for a multi-vendor test environment. It has the capabilities to allow remote testing on a day-to-day basis. To date, vendors have concentrated on interoperability of products within a campus environment, working toward the customer's desire for a truly heterogeneous network. The goal of the laboratory is to provide complete testing for all products used in networking as well as educating graduate and undergraduate students.
