I just studied comparative religion and philosophy a bit. Del's quintessence, while interesting, shouldn't have much bearing on any of that. Looks to be more big bang cosmology, variations on the inflationary hypothesis are where some of the debate rages right now to make the data work. If you were to find enough dark matter to make the universe contract back upon itself that might be another matter. Mathematician Fred Hoyle refused to accept Einstein's equations because he didn't at all like the resemblance between the Big Bang and Genesis. Since then, those of like mind who want an eternal universe have been searching for the Holy Grail of dark matter, to make the thing recycle and get rid of the apparent creatio ex nihilo irritant.
