********************* PR NewsWire General Instrument and Wink Enter Agreement To Offer Advanced Digital Wink Technology on GI's DCT-2000 and DCT-5000+ Set-top Terminals Technology on GI's DCT-2000 and DCT-5000+ Set-top Terminals
HORSHAM, Pa., Aug. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- General Instrument Corporation(NYSE: GIC) and Wink Communications, Inc. today announced an agreement to offer Wink Enhanced Broadcasting(TM) and e-commerce software on the full line of GI's family of digital set-top terminals including the DCT-2000 and DCT-5000+ interactive digital set-tops. Wink(R) technology is currently available on GI's DCT-1000 digital set-top terminal as well as the advanced analog CFT family of set-top terminals. Wink Enhanced Broadcasting adds interactivity and electronic commerce opportunities to traditional television programming and advertising. Wink allows broadcast and cable networks and advertisers to create interactive programming and commercials to which viewers can respond by requesting information or ordering products through a remote control. The Company's Wink Response Network is designed to aggregate these responses and forward them to advertisers. Wink enhancements can provide additional information about programming or advertised products or allow viewers to request information about or purchase advertised products. To access a Wink enhancement, a television viewer simply clicks the remote control of a Wink-enabled television or set-top terminal when the Wink icon appears on the screen.
The DCT-2000 represents the evolution of GI's current-generation interactive digital set-top terminals (DCT-1000 & DCT-1200), offering such enhancements as a double-speed processor, increased memory, and higher-end graphics capabilities. Like the DCT-1000 and 1200, the DCT-2000 combines MPEG-2 digital video and Dolby(R) AC3 digital audio with real-time interactive capabilities to help to bring cable service to an entirely new level. They will enable operators to not only offer increased channel lineups with digital picture and sound, but also to introduce their customers to a host of interactive services such as impulse pay-per-view, video-on-demand, television-based Internet access, community networking and more.
GI's next generation advanced interactive digital terminal, the DCT-5000+, delivers an unprecedented level of processing and graphics capabilities to the digital set-top terminal. Built around a high powered RISC processor and a high-end 3D and picture-in-graphics capable graphics platform, the DCT-5000+ represents the leading edge in next generation digital cable terminals. This powerful processing and graphics capability is also supported by the unit's advanced digital networking capabilities. Offering a built-in DOCSIS compliant cable modem for high-speed networking capability, the DCT-5000+'s unique triple tuner architecture enables users to simultaneously watch TV and surf the Internet or watch and talk using cable IP telephony functionality.
"The Wink technology is highly scaleable, flexible and open and adds tremendous value as a key application on GI's line of digital products," said David Robinson, Senior Vice President and General Manager of GI's Digital Network Systems. "GI is proud to be the first one-stop shop for both digital and analog Wink products. Today's announcement means a system operator can run Wink Enhanced Broadcasting and e-commerce throughout their operations with the confidence that they are purchasing interoperable, future-proof, plug-and-play technology."
Maggie Wilderotter, President and CEO of Wink Communications, said "Today's announcement means broadcasters, cable networks and advertisers can leverage open Wink server technology to seamlessly deliver content to and receive viewer responses from the entire spectrum of GI advanced analog and digital set-top terminals. Wink looks forward to working with GI to offer customers an open digital technology that delivers standards-independent, end-to-end Enhanced Broadcasting and e-commerce solutions."
