Don't people "want to control and have less of " ALL diseases? And doesn't EVERY drug company that makes a drug that targets any disease, see that drug "as a growth vehicle" for their company? I'd say this system (i.e. companies with a profit motive developing drugs to combat diseases) has worked well at developing many amazing new drugs we wouldn't otherwise have. And in the long run, all you have to do is wait a few years and all these drugs will be "off patent", so any company can manufacture and sell them without royalties.
