<<(UPDATE) Investors See Bright Side In Applied Materials Despite Industry Woes

<<Dow Jones Online News, Wednesday, August 12, 1998 at 16:48

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Investors reacted with relative calm Wednesday
toward Applied Materials Inc., the leading maker of equipment for
computer chip factories, despite indications that the semiconductor
industry downturn is far from over.>>

and from same article,

<<Applied is trying to take market share from competitors in the
downturn, and also is trying to sell new technology to chip makers,
which have time to test new equipment in their factories since capacity utilization is low.

Interesting last paragraph. I wonder if AMAT's customers are, in fact, testing AMATs new technology during this downturn. If so, it would seem AMAT will be well positioned vs their competitors when the upturn begins. Jeff
