Worse? They haven't had the time or international funding to get worse. It was partly their (many Asian countries) apparently unwavering belief/confidence in their own "miracle" that allowed/led everyone else to believe in it as well, not to mention our (I mean the US, especially here) liberal hopes for and belief in economics as the Road to Progress in the world. I don't mean to use the word "liberal" here to denote Democrats--it applies to Republicans as well, in some ways even more so. I don't think that the Russians have believed in their country as embodying a "miracle" roadmap for the future for a long time, sporadically perhaps in the years after the Revolution and after WWII, but not since then.
