BTW, I don't know of many guys who accuse women of trying to twist a guy's comments into something more complex. But to twist them into something completely different ... well, now, that's different.
For example, here is a real conversation from my past:
me: Hi, Hon. Happy Birthday. I got you this watch...
her: It's gold. You know I just put silver highlights in my hair. What are you trying to say, anyway? That I'm always late and need to have a watch so YOU won't have to wait? Why are you always criticizing me? Boo hoo.
me: um, I'm sorry, I didn't mean... golly sweety, I just wasn't thinking ... I'll take it back ... would you like to go out for dinner...
That was years ago. The conversation would be a bit different now. And, much shorter.
