OAKT makes chips and sells them. CREAF goes from chip to retail, with branding and higher margins. Seems I remember Oak doing a Warp graphics chip that flopped and never saw daylight...bye-bye r&d money...Wouldn't exactly say that they have the same growth or revenue base as CREAF, and though book val is high, I don't know how much is cash. What is their latest hot product?

Regarding the high end- are you sure that they left because they couldn't make money? Or was it because it was too hard competing with CREAF? It wasn't long ago that you simply couldn't compete with CREAF at the high end. Not because you couldn't make a product with similar quality, but because nobody wanted to pay big bucks and not have a SoundBlaster and all of the compatibility the name brought. High end audio does have a market. Who would have thought you could sell millions of 3D only boards for $300?

As for USB speakers- I think that either it will be a zero in the marketplace, or if it is a success, Creative will get into it and adapt. Personally, I think it will flop. It makes speakers more expensive. It will not sound as good. There is a minimal retail market since most computers already have sound and speakers, and this would be a "downgrade". But it would be nice if it made things easier. Presumably if you can do USB, you have a modern Win98 system. It likely came with sound of some type. And it is likely that you would never have to touch any of its settings, open your computer, etc. anyway.
