From the 'Zen of Shorting'
The great short Chu Mei Ash was noted even in his own time for using Zen principals in his shorting of the ancient Japanese market. Indeed the basic tenets of the great masters shorting techniques cannot be grasped without an understanding of Zen. The following passage from the 'Zen of Shorting' clearly shows this.
The master short Chu Mei Ash on occasion would provide private instructions to some of his pupils. The private sessions were unsolicited by the student and very prized by the students. They were so prized that excluded students were often jealous of the lucky ones who were chosen. This was the case when the master invited a new student Sher Ri (by all accounts a lovely, young Geisha) [please see foot note] to a series of lengthy private sessions. One of the masters students sought to stop the sessions by revealing to the master that Sher Ri was a vegetarian. All of the students knew Chu Mei Ash's favorite dish was baby back ribs as prepared by the great chef Le Cu Pah, the student felt he might cause problems between the master and the favored student. Chu Mei Ash had a certain amount of difficulty with people who did not agree with him and the student hoped the dietary differences would activate the masters notable temper.
However Chu Mei Ash instead said, "You have touched upon an important lesson, little tick. Sher Ri shows discipline and strength in her choice of foods. It is of key importance to one shorting in the market and in ones every day life to both develop discipline and to recognize ones weaknesses."
"Weaknesses master, I am confused. I have seen no weaknesses on your part in the market." replied the student.
"You must look at this question as the great Buddha would, little tick," the master said. "True strength and power comes from abstinence and rejections of worldly temptations. Recognition of one's weaknesses allow one to turn them to strengths. Even the divine Buddha had to cope with his weakness. For the Buddha was a soul in its last incarnation and as such he had such power that the great demons could not face him. Still first he had to recognize the weakness of his body. It was only after he acknowledged his body's needs and began eating and nourishing his body that the full scope of his power arose.
I have studied this aspect of myself a great deal and I too have to make an allowance for my self and recognize my greatest weakness. Instead of seeking the path of abstinence I must indulge myself, allow no barriers to restrict me, and allow myself full scope to my actions. Otherwise this one need that I must gratify would surely cripple me."
"May I be so bold," the student said, "To ask what this overriding demand is that is upon you. It sounds as if it is something overwhelming for you."
"Certainly, little tick, and you are correct it is paramount for me. It is anything that has to do with personal gain."

Footnote-Modern thought is that Chu Mei Ash was much more modern in his approach to women than his contemporaries. He frequently gave private shorting lessons to female students. A few cynical historians have however questioned the nature of these lessons. They have been largely discredited though. Particularly since Mac Millin Press the publisher of Chu Mei Ash's work discovered that the 'man ahead of his time' sold far more books than the more lecherous view point.
