It's more of a "Can a leopard change its spots?" type of question. And the answer is obvious.
Dipy, I agree 100% with your statement about frameworks and how it is near impossible to reproduce the individual successes of Indians abroad in India. However, I don't agree with the "leapard won't change it's spots" comment above.
My fellow mallus have been known for quite some time to comment on the fact that the mallu is a hardworking animal anywhere outside the borders of Malluland (er... Kerala), but turns into a leisure loving parasite the moment he sets foot inside the homestate. There is a lot of truth to this comment, and the social and economic structure in Kerala is to blame for a lot of this.
But take a look at how Kerala has changed in just one century. From a feudal, superstitious, largely illiterate society, to a relatively egalitarian, highly literate, intellectual soceity. I don't see any reason to think that the pace of change has slowed down. I am optimistic that Kerala will change into a more entrepreneurial and capitalistic society in the next century, if for no other reason than that intellectuals are already talking about how the lack of these traits is negative for the state.
I have to say that I haven't thought about India as a whole in the same context much, but India has also seen a lot of change in the past century, and I am cautiously optimistic about the next. |
