Reason,

Movies today have a lot more going for them in terms of marketing and generating income.

1. New movies now will feature songs from top musical groups, which means radio airplay with mention of the movie that the song is from. Also, sometimes a band will use scenes from the movie for there videos. This type of marketing benefits both parties (a.) the movie promotes the song/group causing constant airplay which increases revenues to the band (b.) also the song promotes the movie by giving listeners a visual in their mind of the movie scenes. Or, this pushes the listeners to check out the movie just because they like the band.

2. Video sales both here and overseas brings in a lot of money.
Here is an example. Kevin Costner put out a movie called Waterworld that exceeded $300 million and this did not include promotional fees. Well the movie was a bomb, bringing in from the theatres maybe $30 million. I found out that from video sales nationwide and overseas that they were able to make a profit.

So their is a lot of possibilities here that even we can't imagine.
