Adtran was founded by the former founder of Universal Data Systems (UDS). UDS was another Huntsville startup that he grew into a Fortune 500 company that built high-end modems for commercial use. Several years ago Motorola bought UDS. Many of the UDS employees stayed on at Motorola (including Adtran's founder) to grow it into a major consumer manufacturer of modems (not just a high-end commercial modem manufacturer). Now you can find Motorola modems (from the former UDS facility) in just about every retail store that sales computer equipment. When Adtran was formed, many of the top technical designers from Motorola left to join the new firm.

Considering the technical expertise that Adtran has on staff, I feel good about their chances in becoming a major player in the data switching and communications market. If you are looking for long term growth, I think Adtran is a sure thing. If you are a speculative investor, you had better get some blood pressure medicine.
