Intel to Change PII Thermal Brick

news.com

Meanwhile, mounting evidence that the Intel process technology advantage is a myth, and the high MHz of PII come largely as a result of the thermal advantages of the SEC cartridge:

* Pentium II Overdrive, while on .25u process, maxes out at 333 MHz.

* Intel attributes faster processor speeds to physical modification of the existing thermal brick design.

Conclusion: Intel gets its MHz advantage largely from Slot 1 design. Intel PII gets its speed at a given clock speed from 1/2 speed L2 (witness Celeron).

Can't wait for K7 to see what AMD can do with its own thermal brick and speedy L2.
