Sam, if you will allow me to jump in, SWA has chosen not to respond
to DAL in the way it did to the United Shuttle on the left coast.
Herb has said OK, DAL, go ahead and go through all the pains and costs
associated with trying to be short haul to compete with us, but we are
just going to connect our system to Florida on routes that do not directly
compete with you. I believe the DAL shuttle will only compete on about
3% of SWA routes, so Herb has basically ignored any major reaction.
If DAL is unsuccessful with the shuttle, it will probable come from
within the airline and not from competition.
You will continue to see SWA expand on the east coast and in Florida.
I believe they will continue to seek markets that avoid direct
competition with major hubs, but serve the same area from a smaller
and more convenient location - sound familiar?
