The market is skittish as we know, and Ciena has been losing greenfields contracts (Qwest, Level3, IXC, Williams) to Nortel and Lucent, as we said when we removed Ciena from our list three months ago. However, Ciena is a great company in a promethean field, and Tellabs needs them in order to move to the WDM era. Put it down to the market focus on quarterly pratfalls in the face of a radical shift in the industry paradigm toward Ciena, with its increasing focus on bringing WDM down into metropolitan and even campus networks. I think Tellabs faces a much more difficult transition than Ciena does, but Tellabs has been quietly assembling the optical firepower to thrive in an post SONET era.
