Trey,

<<<<a lot of people with a cable bias seem to think the RBOCs are just going to die>>

I do not have cable bias, but I still believe RBOCs will slowly but surely die. And the reason why I think this way has nothing to do with xDSL or cables or high bandwidth data/voice/video communications. They are monopolies and their management runs them this way. Once they are forced to compete for their survival the management would not know how to do that.

And I believe ATT is paying nearly $70 billions for Teleport, TCI and other stuff (cellular and whatever) not for the sake of being in the TV broadcasting, but for the entering local telephone business and competing for $100 billion a year local voice phone market against RBOCs. MCI and Sprint will be forced to do the same or they will be crashed.

<<t he REALITY is that both cable and DSL are going to win.>>

the REALITY is that cable solution is already spreading, but ADSL is not.

<<we have only begun to find ways to get a lot of data down a twisted pair pipe. it isnt going to stop at 50Mbps VDSL.>>

You remind me physists that have been saing to the Congress 50 years ago just give us the money and we will complete our research in fusion in couple of years and then all energy problems will be resolved forever and ever. We can see the light at the end of the tonnel, they claimed. Now 50 years later the congressmen wonder if those scientists know were the tonnel is.????

The lows of physics say that you can not move high frequency signals over an unshielded wire without signal distortion. Lets see if RBOCs will be able to deploy 1.5 MBps.
