Hi Bran - Let's speculate ... Octel was recently purchased by Lucent for $650 million about 18 month's ago. Lucent paid all cash for this deal. Octel provides services and hardware that delivers voice messaging mail systems to fortune 500 companies. I believe Lucent's main reason for buying Octel was to expand its services to their customers and as a result look to monthly and annual service fees to generate income. The Octel customer base is a cash cow to Lucent.

You will notice that Marty Parker is VP of Strategy and Business Development for Octel Messaging. Not really a high level director at Lucent. Dr. Stuart Wells Senior Director of Sunw's Network Software Group sounds like the R&D type and is not McNeally or any of the newly appointed Directors from the recent restructure.

My guess is that the pending announcement is perhaps an alliance to develop additional "remote" voice mail and/or "e-mail" services that Octel can charge their customers. Maybe it is something similar to what was announced by another company today...

"E-mail by phone service offered - Suburban Chicago-based Planetary Motion said its free e-mail by phone service is now available in 13 major cities. They include New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. The company said CoolMail consolidates your e-mail accounts and gives you access to those messages with a telephone call. When there are messages in your in-box, the service's automated attendant will "read" them to you, using text to speech technology...."

However, any relationship with Lucent is a good one.
