I agree with you completely. Ross' 64-bit Viper will be the true measure of success for rtec's future.

As for workstations and upgrades, a metaphor for that would be if Intel only supported Windows95 on the Pentium, leaving a small window of time for a company like Ross to try to extend the life of the 386/486 until people converted over.

Since Sun's UltraSparc only supports the Sun Solaris operating system (as opposed to the much older Sun OS), that's exactly what Ross is doing now by trying to extend the life of Sun's old Sparc10/Sparc20 design with their upgrades and their workstations.

With Sun lowering the price points on the more powerful UltraSparc on a quarterly basis, this is not a long term strategy.
