technology innovations WaveRider wireless Internet products are significantly faster and easier to implement than traditional "hard-wired" communications networks. The first product, the NCL135, will target businesses needing point to multi-point, LAN-to-Internet connectivity. It will be released in mid-1998 and will, in turn, be upgradeable to WaveRider's flagship product, the LMS270, designed to wirelessly link thousands of end users to the Internet. The LMS270 is scheduled for rollout later in 1998.
The systems combine an advanced form of spread spectrum radio transmission with Digital Signal Processing (DSP), in order to provide wireless data services around a centralized Network Access Point (NAP). Several low-cost Cellular Access Points (CAPs) are deployed within each cell of the Wireless Internet Network, giving the system a strong and identifiable signal in any topographical area.
In terms of benefits, the technology enables Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to increase the number of end users on a network and enhance the level of service by installing additional CAPs in any particular cell. It is a scaleable system able to meet the needs of foreign and domestic markets. WaveRider's spread spectrum technology will give ISPs the flexibility to offer their customers a variable cost structure on a variety of Internet access speeds - from 24 through 135Kbps (ISDN speed) in the LMS270 and up to 512Kbps in a future update. Overall, ISPs will be able to deploy a flexible network rapidly, while significantly reducing operating costs.
market overview It is estimated that there are currently more than 100 million Internet users worldwide with forecasts that this number will double by the year 2000.* Concurrently, the wireless industry expects unprecedented growth from about 175,000 worldwide wireless Internet subscribers today to almost three million by the year 2001.** WaveRider's unique, wireless Internet communications products are poised to succeed in this burgeoning market which will gradually change the way the world communicates.
In terms of revenues, the world market for telecommunications equipment has surpassed the $110 billion (U.S.) mark with wireless products accounting for more than 35 per cent. As well, the electronic commerce communications service market is expected to exceed $600 billion (U.S.) by the millennium.
Wall Street analysts forecast that the telecommunications industry is about to undergo a major restructuring and that two points of power will define the success of emerging companies: Possession of the enabling technology Ability to give bandwidths added value through connectivity services In both cases, WaveRider Communications Inc. delivers.
Current technology industry analysis shows a large gap between what is currently available as an alternative to "wired services" and what the marketplace desires. The WaveRider Wireless Internet Network will fill that gap, emerging at a time when such wireless technology is in high demand worldwide.
