Compaq Displacing Sun Workstations on Wall Street

An interesting article in the latest issue of Information Week, which can be found online at techweb.cmp.com covers recent inroads made by CPQ in displacing Sun workstations on Wall St. The article claims CPQ has recently won two orders worth more than $6 million to displace Sun workstations on the trading floors of Smith Barney and Merrill Lynch. Similar wins with Credit Suisse are also said to be done deals.

This is highly significant. I've always felt SUNW enjoyed a psychological advantage in having Wall St. professionals stare at their moniker on a daily basis. Now it seems that CPQ may start enjoying that same "edge". The bad news for Sun, of course, is that the main reason for the displacement is that the CPQ boxes start at around half the price of their Sun equivalents and the fact that almost all of the important applications which used to be run on the Sun boxes are now available in NT versions.

I won't wander into the lion's den of the Sun folders to point out that margin erosion will figure prominently in SUNW's 1997 performance, but it is clear that CPQ intends to profit from its competitive position in providing low-cost industry-standard solutions.
