From My iMac to You!

Well, it looks like Phil was the first to get his iMac post in- I will settle for second. I was chosen to give the toddler a bath tonight!

Sire had asked me what it is like- I'll give my impressions.

1) CompUSA was really humming. They were offering an upgrade to 64MB ram for $39, including installation, if you knew who to talk to. That's for me! I'll end up loading photoshop on this cutie.

2) The iMac looks even better in person. I love the mouse, it fits my hand much better than the one that came with my starmax (which is has a hair trigger, to boot). The keyboard has a great feel, and I think I'll get used to it real quick.

3) It took me 9 minutes to unpack and set up. It took me 29 minutes to find the sheet from my ISP with all the news server addresses etc, and to try to remember my frickin' password, all while shooing the cats away from the new item in the house! It took two minutes to set up the internet hookup, and get on-line to say hello.

4) What is it like? It's like using internet explorer. Not my browser choice- I'll fix that later!. I also need to set up the browser how I prefer it- I run at 1024x whatever resolution, but bump the default fonts up two points for easier reading. This reduces the effective size of all the graphics while keeping the text easy to read. The screen is VERY crisp, and although I was worried about the 15" size, I am not anymore. The screen is really nice- much better than adequate!

This is a snappy little computer. I don't know how fast it really is yet, but it sings.

Our CompUSA sold out of 33 iMacs today, 50 more are due in Wednesday, and people are waiting on them already.

It was fun watching the people look at the thing. Somebody's kid (10 years old maybe) was a Nanosaur pro, and he was putting the demo unit through hell. The kids comment was "this is really smooth and fast!" The graphics were pretty stunning. The GUYs were saying stuff like "Well, you can't upgrade" and their wives were saying "you take it out of the box and you plug it in." I guess if you think you are a computer expert, the iMac may not be for you. I am a computer expert, so I got one.

Now, I am going to stop rambling about my new toy, and go surf the web!
