Hi Vaughn!

Let us all hope that the Angolan situation gets cleared up soon. However without UN military forces it may be a while. I do not know how familiar you are with the various UN military roles but military observers have the least power to affect change.

They are lightly armed and carry only sidearms which are only meant for self defense. Usually they work in teams of two or three. As the name implies, their sole mission is to observe and then report back to the UN through a sometimes long process. They rely on the good graces of the parties involved to give them free access. If free access is denied by one or both of the parties, they usually stick around the hotels where they are billetted and wait for better days which sometimes are few and far apart. Quite boring and stressful.

I do not hold much hope that the security council will do much of anything. Nobody wants to get involved these days and it costs too much money.

This is the war season and in a few months they will get tired out and things will be back to semi normal.

Cheers!!! Peter
